In America: Remember, an art installation created by Suzanne Brennan Firstenberg resulted in planting over 700,000 white flags – each honoring an American who has died from COVID-19. Thousands visited this immense field of flags on the National Mall, in Washington, D.C., from September 17 – October 3, 2021.

GISCorps was asked to provide qualified volunteers to validate digital crowdsourced submissions via Survey 123 using Esri’s Crowdsource Manager application. Project lead Shoreh Elhami selected Quanxin (Jenny) Cheng, Charles Feng, and Songmei Li for the task. Later on, two additional volunteers joined the effort; Mackenzie Fox and Kenneth Hornfeldt. Once approved by the volunteers, over 8,000 form submissions were transferred to flags by another group of In America: Remember volunteers in Washington, D.C., and planted on the National Mall as part of the COVID-19 memorial art installation.
Further details about the project can be found in the projects’ Hub site at InAmericaFlags.org and numerous publications including the NY Times, Washington Post, and USA Today.
