Assist with Ecuador Earthquake’s GIS Needs - Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT)
An earthquake of magnitude 7.8 hit the coastal region of Ecuador on April, 16th at 23:58 UTC. This major event was followed by several shocks (http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map). The tasks consist of drawing roads, towns, villages, for coordinating help efforts from government institutions and civil society initiatives of rescue. Infrastructure has been damaged and the main access roads are blocked, leaving coastal towns disconnected from rescue efforts.
Here are two Humanitarian OpenStreetmap Team (HOT) tasks for the Ecuador earthquake.
GISCorps volunteers can log onto HOT with their OSM account and start contributing to this relief effort.
New OSM users can learn more at this page.
Make sure to follow the instructions shown for each task. Primarily this digitizing effort is collecting Residential areas, Secondary, Tertiary, Residential, and Unclassified (minor) roads. Additionally the relief agencies are asking for buildings to be traced with square corners where appropriate.
